Mixed Initiative in Dialogue : An Investigation into
نویسندگان
چکیده
Conversation between two people is usually of Mixed-Initiative, with Control over the conversation being transferred from one person to another. We apply a set of rules for the transfer of control to 4 sets of dialogues consisting of a total of 1862 turns. The application of the control rules lets us derive domain-independent discourse structures. The derived structures indicate that initiative plays a role in the structuring of discourse. In order to explore the relationship of control and initiative to discourse processes like centering, we analyze the distribution of four diierent classes of anaphora for two data sets. This distribution indicates that some control segments are hierarchically related to others. The analysis suggests that discourse participants often mutually agree to a change of topic. We also compared initiative in Task Oriented and Advice Giving dialogues and found that both allocation of control and the manner in which control is transferred is radically diierent for the two dialogue types. These diierences can be explained in terms of collaborative planning principles.

MIMIC: An Adaptive Mixed Initiative Spoken Dialogue System for Information Queries
This paper describes MIMIC, an adaptive mixed initiative spoken dialogue system that provides movie showtime information. MIMIC improves upon previous dialogue systems in two respects. First, it employs initiative-oriented strategy adaptation to automatically adapt response generation strategies based on the cumulative effect of information dynamically extracted from user utterances during the ...
متن کاملMixed Initiative in a Spoken Dialogue System
In this paper, we outline a data driven approach to mixed initiative dialogue in acoustic user interfaces to databases. We present the knowledge sources that our dialogue planning algorithm needs: the dialogue model, the dialogue history, and the application description. Further, we discuss how the notions of taking, keeping, giving, and relinquishing the turn are reflected in our approach and ...
متن کاملMixed-initiative natural language dialogue with variable communicative modes
As speech and natural language processing technology advance, it now reaches a stage where the dialogue control or initiative can be studied to realise usable and friendly human computer interface programs such as computer dialogue systems. One of the major problems concerning dialogue initiative is who should take the dialogue initiative when. This thesis tackles this dialogue initiative probl...
متن کاملEvaluating Automatic Dialogue Strategy Adaptation for a Spoken Dialogue System
In this paper, we describe an empirical evaluation of an adaptive mixed initiative spoken dialogue system. We conducted two sets of experiments to evaluate the mixed initiative and automatic adaptation aspects of the system, and analyzed the resulting dialogues along three dimensions: performance factors, discourse features, and initiative distribution. Our results show that 1) both the mixed i...
متن کاملIdentification of Speaker Actions in Mixed Initiative Dialogue
Today’s state-of-the-art spoken language dialogue systems (SLDSs) are mainly system-directed leaving very little initiative to the user. This paper discusses how to enable controlled steps in the direction of mixedinitiative SLDSs. The discussion is based on experience from the design, implementation and test of system-directed dialogue for a spoken language dialogue system and on first Wizard ...
